The Advantage and Disadvantage of Drinking Alcohol

Image
If you don't normally drink alcohol, there's no good reason to start now. In fact, health experts say there isn't a safe level of drinking alcohol, as alcohol use is the seventh leading risk factor for deaths globally, according to a landmark August 2018 study in The Lancet. But if you like to kick back with a glass of wine or a cold beer every now and then, there are safer ways to drink — and the first step is to curb your intake. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends people assigned female at birth (AFAB) limit their intake to one alcoholic drink per day and people assigned male at birth (AMAB) only have up to two drinks. What does that look like exactly? Here's a breakdown from the CDC: 12 ounces of beer (5 percent alcohol content) 8 ounces of malt liquor (7 percent alcohol content) 5 ounces of wine (12 percent alcohol content) 1.5 ounces or a shot of 80-proof distilled spirits or liquor, such as gin, rum, vodka and whiskey One way to ap...

To keep yourself fit and feeling great, you can make several simple changes to your routine that will help. Now is the time to take a more proactive approach to your health for a bright and healthy future. If you’re a woman over the age of 50, consider these eight tips to improve your health: 1. Consume Heart-Healthy Food Healthy FoodsAs women age, a focus on heart health should become a top priority. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one killer of women in America [1]. It actually kills more women in the U.S. than the next three causes of death combined. Keys For Successful Mediation

Image
1. ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT. This is probably the most important thing that you can do to help reach a successful conclusion in the mediation of your dispute. The American justice system is based on the notion that money will either heal your injuries, compensate you for your pain, or gain you the profit you expected from the deal you made. If you are angry because of the harm you perceive that the other side has inflicted on you, whether before or during the litigation, and you have a mind set to obtain the greatest advantage possible over your opponent, you will be sorely disappointed. You need to attend the mediation with an open mind, and be willing to discuss the issues with the selected neutral, remaining positive that this process will save you time and money and may result in an acceptable solution. A mediation where one of the parties insists on gaining a pound of flesh from the opposition will assuredly fail. Thus, the first thing you need to do is approach mediation with an attit...

Tips for Drinking more Water

Image
Whether you prefer plain, sparkling or infused water, drink plenty every day. So much water does an average adult in a temperate climate need? Mayo Clinic recommends this minimum daily intake of water: Women — 11.5 cups, or 92 ounces Men — 15.5 cups, or 124 ounces You lose water through breathing, perspiring, urine and bowel movements. You must continually replace your body's water supply by eating food and drinking beverages that contain water. About 20% of the daily intake of liquid comes from food and the rest from drinks. Anyone can become dehydrated, but certain people are at greater risk, including infants, young children and people who work or exercise outdoors. Even mild dehydration can leave you feeling tired and lacking energy. In addition, older adults are more likely to become dehydrated. As you age, your body's fluid reserve becomes smaller, your ability to conserve water is reduced and your thirst sense becomes less acute. These problems are compounded by chronic ...

What about Dry Skin and Hot to Prevent

Dry skin can be a temporary condition that people may experience at some point in their lives, especially during the winter. For other people, dry skin can be a lifelong condition. Skin may look and feel flaky, itchy, rough or scaly when dry. Although skin often is driest on your hands, arms and lower legs, this varies from person to person. Signs and symptoms of dry skin depend on your age, health, where you live, time spent outdoors and cause of the problem. Common causes of dry skin You may hear dry skin called xerosis or xeroderma. Tips to Live a Happier Life

Think of your energy as a limited resource, like money in an account. You begin the day with a certain amount to spend. The amount varies from person to person based on factors, such as age, sleep, stress levels, medical conditions and lifestyle. Activities and interactions withdraw energy from or deposit energy into your account. While you may not always have control over activities that deplete your energy, you can take steps to deposit more energy into your account. Eat nourishing food. A well-balanced, healthy diet is at the core of well-being. But it's common to regard healthy eating primarily as a tool for weight loss. According to the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a balanced diet high in fruits and vegetables, lean protein, low-fat dairy and whole grains is needed for optimal energy. You really are what you eat. Consume a variety of foods from all the food groups to get a range of nutrients to provide energy throughout the day. Opt for fresh or frozen fruits and veg...

Lung Cancer Risk on Women

Image
Overall, the rate of lung cancer among both genders has continued its general downward trend during the past two decades, but the decline has been steeper among men than among women, the analysis showed. The study included health data for about half the U.S. population from 2000 to 2019. The researchers are perplexed at the differing rates of decline between genders, because women are not as likely to smoke as men. According to the CDC, 13% of men in the U.S. smoked in 2021, and 10% of women smoked.  Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. There were about 238,000 new cases of lung cancer in the U.S. in 2023, and 127,000 deaths, according to National Cancer Institute data. About 75% of people diagnosed with lung cancer do not live at least five years past the year of diagnosis. “These findings are very concerning,” said lead author Ahmedin Jemal, DVM, PhD, senior vice president of surveillance and health equity science at the American Cancer Society, in a stat...

Heart Attack Coming on You

Image
MINOCA may account for up to 25% to 30% of all heart attacks in women (and less than 10% in men), according to C. Noel Bairey Merz, MD, director of the Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The symptoms of MINOCA are the same as those of a classic heart attack that happens in someone with coronary artery disease. But because no blockages are found in the main coronary arteries, patients often leave the hospital unsure about what caused their MINOCA heart attack and how to prevent another one. During the next 3 years, Conrad estimates she had 20 more episodes. None were as severe as the first one and, as far as she knows, none were heart attacks. She visited the ER three more times, but after being sent home as before, she stopped going. Conrad consulted a cardiologist, who suspected spasms in the coronary artery wall and prescribed nitroglycerin for her chest pain (angina). She eventually quit her job as a local government finance dire...
